I have a folder on my drive called Bad Dog Photos. It has roughly 11,000 images. Black labs reduced to smears. A whippet mid-turn that looks like a smudge of grey paint. A pug whose eyes are technically in the frame but spiritually somewhere else entirely.
That folder is not a monument to failure. It is a data set. Chapter Two: The Settings That Actually Change Your Results

Use your phone's native camera app. Not a third-party camera, not a social media camera, not a filter app with a camera inside it. Third-party apps on both iOS and Android frequently lose access to the multi-frame computational pipeline, the dedicated neural processing hardware, and the depth sensor fusion. Now, the settings.
Animal Eye AF, and why the lock matters more than the detection

But there is a hard physical constraint that no amount of training fixes: the depth sensor's resolution at a given distance.
Stand too close, and the depth map cannot resolve individual hairs against the background. Stand too far,r and the depth difference between the animal and the background becomes too small for the sensor to separate reliably. The usable window is narrower than people expect.
Action mode, and the shutter speed you cannot dial in manually
When the animal is genuinely running, no amount of focus locking will save you. You need exposure time down in the low thousandths of a second, and on a phone sensor that means a lot of light loss, which means the phone will fight you the whole way.
Action mode exists to win that fight on your behalf. It aggressively raises shutter speed and electronic stabilization, and relies on subject-centered motion prediction. On Pixel and iPhone it is a running-person toggle in the main camera view. On Samsung, it lives in the running personas carousel.
The trade-off nobody mentions: Action mode crops. You lose roughly the outer ten to fifteen percent of the frame. It also suppresses some of the computational smoothing, so in very low light you will see more noise than you are used to. Both are worth it. A slightly noisy sharp frame beats a clean blurry one every single time, and I will die on that hill.
Pepper, a nine-year-old greyhound, shelter intake photos
Pepper came in underweight, anxious, and completely uninterested in standing still. My first forty frames were garbage. Standard photo mode, auto everything, and every single one had either motion blur in the legs or a focus miss on the nose.

Chapter Three: Perspective: The Free Upgrade Nobody Uses
Technical settings get all the attention. Perspective is what separates a snapshot from a portrait, and it costs nothing.
The ground-level flip
Physically turn your phone upside down so the lenses sit at the very bottom edge, then lower it until the camera is basically touching the ground. Enable volume-button shutter in your settings so you can fire without reaching for the screen.
Why it works: this puts the lens at the animal's eye level. For a small dog or puppy, a camera at their height makes them appear substantial and heroic rather than small and cute. Chapter Four: Getting in Look
This is the part where technology genuinely beats a squeaky toy, but only if you are careful.
Sound trigger apps play frequencies you physically cannot produce with your mouth. Squirrel chatter and bird calls reliably trigger a hard, focused stare in cats and in a surprising number of dogs. Crinkling plastic and paper sounds produce the head tilt, which is the expression everyone wants and nobody can plan for.
